Did you know that the Jesuits in Malta have special collections of archival documents and printed publications that keep alive the memory and legacy of Jesuits in Malta? This unit is presently housed at Loyola House in Naxxar.

Did you know that the Jesuits in Malta have special collections of archival documents and printed publications that keep alive the memory and legacy of Jesuits in Malta? This unit is presently housed at Loyola House in Naxxar.

It consists of two main sections:

1. The Archives – mostly private unpublished manuscripts or documents.

2. The printed collections – publications in the public domain

The Archives contain information about:

1. Individual Jesuits

2. The Jesuits as a corporate body covering subjects like:

  • Their residences e.g. St. Aloysius College, Mt. St. Joseph Retreat House, Sarria House etc.
  • Their publications e.g. Problemi tal-Llum, Lil-Ħbiebna, Regina et Mater, etc.
  • Their apostolate work e.g. Appostolat tat-Talb, Jesuit Refugee Services
  • Their missions abroad in India, East Africa, South America etc.

These documents are not in the public domain and are not normally available for public viewing or consultation.

Printed Collections

Then there are the Printed collections that include books, magazines, pamphlets etc by or about:

1. Individual Jesuits eg

  • What was written and published by Fr. Alfred Darmanin SJ (psychologist)
  • What was written about Fr. Emmanuel Magri SJ (archaeologist and writer)

2. Jesuits as a corporate body:

  • Publications by Maltese Jesuits such as the SAC Annual and Directory, Il-Messagier tal-Qalb ta’ Gesu’ etc
  • A collection of writings about the Jesuits in Malta

The publications in this section are all in the public domain and can be consulted on the premises only, on Mondays, by appointment.

Some of the Jesuits’ publications, that are in the public domain are in duplicates and are available for sale, during periodic bookfairs held at Loyola House in Naxxar. In these bookfairs one can also find many other publications (ex SJ libraries) that are no longer required. The next bookfair is on Saturday 27th June 2026.
