Celebrating with international communities at the St Aloysius College Church

The St Aloysius College Church has become a vibrant centre of international faith, welcoming Kerala Christian communities for their regular Holy Qurbana and enriching its English liturgies through the participation of an international choir led by Filipino members of Couples for Christ.

Collaboration with Kerala denominations

These last years, our College Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, has been very busy indeed, mainly because two different denominations of people from Kerala, India, who are at present working in Malta, use it regularly for their Holy Qurbana.

St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church have been using our Church since 2015. They use it every week and also celebrate all the special feast days and functions of the liturgical year. At present this community serves around 280 faithful. Their parish priest has changed over the years. Formerly, a priest studying in Europe would come over specifically to celebrate their Holy Qurbana. But now their parish priest resides in Malta. They try to have one of their Bishops visit them once a year. Such visits are celebrated in a grand way.

A warm and respectful friendship has grown between this community and the Jesuits at the  College community. Their liturgies are splendid. They sing throughout their very long liturgies. Their faithful are very devout. It is so encouraging to see the Church full of young families who are very dedicated to our faith.

Besides, in the last couple of years, occasionally, the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church also have had their Sunday Holy Qurbana here at the College Church. Their priest is studying abroad and comes over to Malta every two/three months to celebrate their liturgy. This congregation is small. Again, it is composed of young families and individuals from Kerala.

International Choir

These last months our Sunday English Mass (9.30am) has been greatly enriched by the musical animation done by the local branch of Couples for Christ (a Filipino international Catholic charismatic organization). A growing group of others, coming from different countries, are joining the nucleus. They sing and animate the liturgy beautifully. One of the big events animated this year by this choir was the Easter Triduum where they were joined by Mr Alex Mamo and other Maltese friends and which, for the first time, our community offered in English.
