‘Ayudar a las almas’ (assisting of souls) was a motto which inspired St. Ignatius in his foundation, governance of the Society of Jesus.
As from its genesis, the founder willed that the fundamental mission would be that of accompanying souls to enter in relationship with their creator. Amongst other people many needy people topped his list of priorities. Nowadays the Society is committed to help out in various manners the refugees, AIDS patients, drug addicts and homeless people, throughout the planet.
Peter Hans Kolvenbach the Society’s Superior General insists that Jesuits should strive to work for, be with and if possible be like the needy people they ought to serve.
In Malta, the Jesuits are lending a good hand in the safeguarding the dignity of the so termed ‘illegal immigrants’. Another social commitment is the Centre of Faith and Justice and the literacy programmes of the Paulo Freire Institute.
