  • India: Priest dies as result of Orissa violence
    (Oct-31-2008) On 25 August at 10.30 pm, diocesan priest Fr Bernard Digal, the Treasurer of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar in Orissa state was attacked by an angry mob. He survived the beating despite head injuries and wounds stemming from iron rods on his body. His driver, who had escaped, found Fr Bernard at 4.30 in the morning close to death. He was then brought by the police to a nearby hospital from which, as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Mumbai and then to Chennai. Fr Bernard died of his injuries on the night of 28 October after struggling for two months.
