Sacred Space

We invite you to make a 'Sacred Space' in your day, and spend ten minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer, with the help of on-screen guidance and scripture chosen specially every day.

Something to think and pray about this week

I imagine myself visiting the Jewish Temple as Jesus enters (John 2:13). I am accustomed to the money-changers and hucksters who convenience worshippers by selling cattle, sheep and doves for the ritual sacrifices. The fury of Jesus startles and upsets me. I think to myself, ‘Surely these guys are making an honest penny? They are offering a service.' But commerce tends to grow and grow when it finds a market, so the Temple, the place of prayer, degenerated into a sort of marketplace. This is the house of God. When money creeps in, it tends to take over. Jesus needed to challenge the drift and reassert the holiness of the Temple.
Does it happen in my life, Lord? Is there any of the Christian sacraments untouched by commercialism? We grow accustomed to the souvenir shops in Lourdes, the event managers of weddings, and the organisers of First Communion parties and outfits. We take for granted there will be Christening parties, First Communion money, Confirmation discos, wedding feasts... These occasions are meant to be the touch of God at key moments in our lives; but can God get a hearing amid the clatter of coins?

It might seem strange to pray at your computer, in front of a screen, especially if there are other people around you, or distracting noises. But God is everywhere, all around us, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations. When we know this, and with a bit of practice, we can pray anywhere! The following pages will guide you through a session of prayer, in six stages, including preparing your body and mind, and culminating in reflection on a scripture passage chosen specially for the day. The stages are:
The Presence of God

Freedom

Consciousness

The Word

Conversation

Conclusion
Although they are written in the first person -- "I" -- the prayers are for doing, rather than for reading out. Each stage is a kind of exercise or meditation aimed at helping you get in touch with God, and God's presence in your life.
